I have been meaning to start a regular post about images that for one reason or another make me pause.
This could be during the fleeting seconds after I’ve taken and reviewed the shot, during the editing process, or even sometime later when going back over previous weddings. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a picture that is technically perfect, or one that is a drop dead crowd pleaser.
It’s what I love about photography. There is such a vast array of talented wedding photographers out there, and not a single one is the same in the way they shoot. Some will love their work, others won’t and thats just how it is. It’s a bit like Strictly, it’s either a must watch or time to do some photo editing 🙂
The image below is from the very recent Kent wedding of Benjy and Hannah (full blog of which is here). It was a great day and there were plenty of pictures from it I could write about, but this one is one of them that made me pause and smile.
A wedding day is such a huge occasion for the father of the bride. It’s one of those days that as a father you have the honour and pride of being able to walk your girl down the aisle. It’s emotional. I have two young daughters myself and know I will be a blubbering mess when that day arrives for me.
Although Hannah’s father is partially obscured, I kind of like that in a way as it’s capturing a brief hidden moment where is looking at her and bursting with quiet pride. I remember that straight after this frame was taken my view of him became obscured so that single frame then became even more special.
As ever thoughts on this below or on social media are always great to hear.
A great example of emotions and memories playing a far greater role in the importance of an image than technique or artistic quality. Neither is more important or greater than the other, but as the photographer (professional or otherwise) it is important to be able to distinguish between them and understand what it is that makes a particular photograph ‘good’.
Thanks for the well worded comment Toby Deveson, couldn’t agree more!
Steve, what a fantastic set of photographs !! You really captured the atmosphere of Hannah and Benjy’s wedding and so many people have commented about the discreet way you were able to mingle amongst the guests and take such spectacular photos.
Brigitte and I particularly liked the many black and white shots as illustrated superbly in one you chose to post – Why I love this picture..
What a joyful day and so many memories wonderfully captured by your lens.
Thanks again and best wishes for the future,
Trevor and Brigitte
Thankyou for the lovely words Trevor and Brigitte, it was a pleasure meeting you both and thoroughly enjoyed photographing Benjy and Hannah’s amazing day! Steve
